Generally considered to be good for health, coconut oil is as unhealthy as butter and animal fat.

Animal fats are generally not considered good for health, while vegetable oils such as olives and sunflowers are considered good choices for health. Some experts claim that coconut oil may be better than other saturated fats. However, according to the American Heart Association, there are no reliable studies to support this claim.

Why is it harmful

Eating a diet that is high in saturated fat can increase the level of low density lipoprotein LDL ie bad cholesterol. This may block the arteries or increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

According to the American Heart Association, 82 percent of the fat in coconut oil is saturated. This amount is more than butter (63 percent), beef (50 percent) and pig fat (39 percent).

The American Heart Association has said in a consultation that people should limit their intake of saturated fat and instead consume non-saturated oils like olives and sunflowers.
